Class 80 (3) A device for restraining a load or thrust P on a member d against a fixed surface e comprises a toggle arrangement of three balls or rollers a, b, c maintained in alignment, Fig. 1, against a flat surface f by a spring-pressed member g to hold the member d in the position shown. This toggle arrangement is adapted to be collapsed to the position shown in Fig. 3 by a tripping force T acting at right-angles to the load P on one of the balls or rollers b through a rod l. In a modified arrangement, a constant tripping force T is applied but is overcome by a holding force on the member g, such as by an electromagnet, until the holding force is reduced, as by opening a switch, when the toggle will be collapsed. In cases where a larger movement than that of the diameter of the ball or roller b is required, the member d may act as a latch which holds a loaded member through the engagement of inclined surfaces so that a component of the load acts on the member d to collapse the toggle on application of the tripping force thereto.
