Abstract

796,683. Controlling vehicles. NEWTON, E. A., and NEWTON, W. H. April 20, 1955 [April 22, 1954], No. 11651/54. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXXII] A stabilizing system for a road vehicle comprises for each wheel of the vehicle a hydraulic ram operatively connected to the road opening for that wheel, the ram and road spring being operatively connected in series between the chassis and axle, and means for controlling the supply of liquid under pressure to cause, on the vehicle effecting a turn, a lowering of the side of the vehicle chassis on the inside of the turn. As shown in Fig. 1 of the Provisional Specification, a stub-axle 12 is carried by upper and lower wishbones 15, 15 and a coil spring is located between an abutment 17 on the chassis 18 and an arm 21, which is pivoted on the same axis as that of the lower wishbone and which is operatively connected with the piston 24 of a hydraulic ram 23. Liquid under pressure is supplied to the ram 23 against a return spring 26 by means of the pump and valve arrangement disclosed in Specification 720,551, the valve being modified to direct the pressure liquid to the rams on the inside of a curve taken by the vehicle. As applied to a leaf spring suspension, a shackle 31 is povitally connected to a plate 32 which is pivoted at 34 to the vehicle chassis 33. A hydraulic ram 38 carried by the chassis is operatively connected through the plate 32 to the leaf spring and is supplied with pressure liquid through a pipe 42, against a return spring 35. According to Fig. 2 (not shown) of the Provisional Specification, the ram is mounted vertically and acts directly on the shackle 31. The lowering of the side of the vehicle on the inner side of a curve may be accompanied by a raising of the side on the outer side of the curve.
