796,568. Opening and cleaning fibres. DODD INVESTMENTS, Ltd., RUSCA, R A,. and YOUNG, R. C. June 18, 1956 [July 27, 1955], No. 18773/56. Class 120(1) In a cotton or like opening machine of the type having a horizontal belt conveyer 2, Fig. 1, leading to toothed opened cylinders 3 arranged in a wall-like series rising from and curving back towards belt 2, cylinders 3 and belt 2 being rotated in the same direction so as to produce a rotating mass of fibres from which cylinders 3 continuously extract thin layers, the thin layers are stripped from cylinders 3 by a series of lickerin-type beater cylinders 7 which buffet them across the bars 8 of a grid section. Trash collecting beneath bars 8 in chambers 9 is removed by spiral conveyers 10. The cleaned fibres is doffed from cylinders 7 by doffers 13 into suction flue ducts 14. Cylinders 3 and 7 are "positivelytoothed" (i.e. have teeth with forward faces inclined towards the direction of rotation; cylinders 13 and a "kicker" cylinder 4 are "negatively-toothed". Belt 2 and cylinders 3, 7 and 13 have progressively increasing surface speeds. In a modification, two large beater cylinders are provided, each co-operating with two cylinders 3; a second beater cylinder 12, with grid bars above, may be interposed between a large beater cylinder 11 and the doffer. The cover section 5 of the machine has a perforate liner 15 and a trash-removing spiral conveyer 17 is provided in the space between.
