Abstract
796,236. Electric heating. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION, [formerly UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION]. March 9, 1956 [March-11, 1955], No. 7387/56. Class 39(3) A furnace charge 10 of finely divided solids, e.g. a reaction mixture of titanium oxide and carbonaceous reducing agent, is heated to temperatures of 1500‹C. and above by the passage of current therethrough by embedding in the charge transversely to the current flow and parallel to each other a number of carbon conductor bars 18 spaced from each other and from the electrodes 16, filling the spaces between the bars and between the electrodes with granular resistor material, and passing current through the electrodes to heat the resistor material.
