Abstract

795,700. Impregnated electric contact brushes. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION, [formerly UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION]. Nov. 29, 1955 [Dec. 7, 1954], No. 34099/55. Class 140. A method of making an electrical contact brush having an improved service life comprises impregnating a carbonaceous brush with a solution or suspension of silica in water or of a silicone resin or organic silicate in a suitable solvent and thereafter baking the impregnated brush at a temperature between 1000‹ C. and 1600‹ C. The brushes may be plain carbon, graphitic or electrographitic brushes. The brush stock may be impregnated with a colloidal solution of silica in water, quickly chilled to 0‹ C. or lower, dried and then baked first at a temperature between 600<SP>0</SP> C. and 850‹ C. and subsequently between 1000‹ C. and 1600‹ C. A specified solution of an organic silicate is ethyl silicate in ethanol. The baking process may be carried out in a series of steps at successively higher baking temperatures, with a cooling stage between each baking step.
