[Class 95] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] A method of forming a protective coating on an article comprises coating the article with a polyvinyl acetate resin or with a polyglyceryl phthalate resin, heating the coating to a temperature of about 180‹C., and thereafter slowly raising the coating to a higher temperature of 250‹ to 320‹C., so that the coating attains this temperature without becoming blistered, and maintaining said coating at said higher temperature for a sufficient time to cause the coating to become hard without being appreciably carbonized. The method may be used for the coating of electrical insulators, for the sealing of electrical condensers, for the coating of transformer laminations, and in the making of electrical resistances where a thin wire is wound upon a support, or a thin coating, e.g. of carbon, is applied to the support and the whole is covered by a protective coating.
