Abstract
Itaconic acid is produced by the fermentation of an aqueous sugar-containing nutrient medium by the aerobic cultivation therein of eumycetes, such as species of the genus Aspergillus, which will convert sugar into itaconic acid, characterized in that the nutrient medium contains one or more finely divided adsorbents. Suitable such adsorbents are anhydrous calcium sulphate, kaolin, bleaching earth, fuller's earth or anhydrous silicic acid, used singly or in admixture. The adsorbents may be activated in known manner, an example being the heat activation of gypsum. With an average particle size within the range of 1 to 50m , a suitable concentration of adsorbent is 0.5 to 5 grams per litre of nutrient medium. In examples, a nutrient medium comprising sucrose, ammonium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, monobasic potassium sulphate in tap water with (1) heat-activated calcium sulphate, (2) kaolin, or (3) fuller's earth as the adsorbent, is sterilized and then inoculated with Aspergillus terreus at 32 DEG C. under atmospheric pressure with careful temperature control, stirring and aeration, whereby itaconic acid is produced. A comparative example using the same nutrient medium but with the omission of the adsorbent gives lower yields of itaconic acid. Specification 602,866 is referred to.
