Abstract

In a process for the production of yeast there is used in the propagation medium a solution prepared by inoculating a solution containing fermentable sugar, e.g. aqueous solutions of beet molasses, beet juices, syrup from the conversion of starch, converted starch, converted wood or other forms of cellulose, with an organism capable of synthesising biotin-like substances and/or other water-soluble vitamins and yeast growth factors, e.g. Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis, growing the organism in the solution and thereafter sterilizing the resulting solution. In an example, 20 Roux flasks each containing 100 millilitres of a solution containing 20 grams of dextrose, 1 gram of casein hydrolysate and traces of minerals salt per litre, were seeded with Pseudomonas fluorescens and incubated for 48 hours at pH 6.8 and at a temperature of 30 DEG C. A volume of 20 litres of a 5 per cent weight by volume solution of beet molasses in water was inoculated with the 2 litres of medium from the Roux flasks, which then contained 1.4 grams of moist cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens per litre, and the mixture aerated at a rate of 9.5 cubic feet of air per minute for 30 hours at a temperature of 25 DEG C and a pH of approximately 6.8, at the end of which time 4 litres of the liquor containing 200 grams of molasses obtained was autoclaved at 5 pounds per square inch pressure for 10 minutes and then added to untreated beet molasses and the whole was sterilized and filtered, the resulting mixture being then used as the medium for a yeast fermentation.
