Abstract
Itaconic acid is obtained by the aerobic fermentation of aqueous carbohydrates, using submerged eumycetes or true fungi known to be capable of producing said acid. The substrate may be subjected to mechanical agitation and an oxygen containing gas and neutralizing agents may be present. Starch, glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, molasses, malted grains and invert sugar are mentioned as carbohydrates which may be fermented, and nutrient substances such as ammonium salts, nitrates, urea, amino acids, potassium salts, magnesium salts and phosphates are employed. In examples, spores of Aspergillus terreus are used to inocculate sucrose solutions containing sodium nitrate and alginate which are maintained in an agitated condition.
