Abstract

L-Tryptophan is prepared by reacting 3-indolepyruvic acid with an amino group source in a neutral or slightly alkaline aqueous medium at a temperature of between 25 and 40 DEG C., in the presence of cells of a species of micro-organism of the genus Micrococcus, Serratia, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Escherichia or Aerobacter, together with a monosaccharide and/or organic acid and magnesium ions. The cells of the micro-organism may be supplied dry or intact, or as a cultured broth. Amino group sources specified are ammonium chloride, sulphate or nitrate, urea and organic nitrogen containing materials. Monosaccharides specified are glucose, fructose, lactose, maltose, sucrose and pentose. Organic acids specified are citric and tartaric acids. Surface-active agents may also be added to the reaction medium. Specified microorganisms are M. ureae, rubens, luteus ATCC.398 and lysodeikticus ATCC.4698; S. marcesceus; F. arboresceus; P. docunhoe and riboflavinus; B. cereus and megatherium; E. coli; and A. cloacae and aerogenes.
