Abstract

Micrococcus lysodeikticus is produced by inoculating an aqueous nutrient medium containing carbohydrate, proteinaceous materials, growth factors and mineral salts with M. lysodeikticus especially M. lysodeikticus ATCC 4698 under submerged aerobic conditions and maintaining the pH of the medium at 7.0 to 9.5 and preferably 7.5 to 9.0 throughout the cultivation. Specified carbohydrates are dextrose, sucrose, maltose molasses and corn syrup. Sources of proteinaceous material and growth factors are yeast extract, corn steep liquor, autolysed yeast and peptone. Mineral salts are water-soluble salts of magnesium, sodium, iron, potassium, manganese, sulphur and phosphorus. The medium is buffered at the desired pH by means of sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium citrate or a mixture of di-and tri-sodium phosphate. A preferred medium contains yeast extract, dextrose, sodium chloride, ferrous sulphate, magnesium sulphate, manganese sulphate and sodium bicarbonate in water and has a pH of 8.8. M. lysodeikticus is rich in catalase.
