A reflecting layer of titanium oxide, e.g., rutile or anatose, 10-50Á thick is provided between the phosphor layer and the conductive layer of an electroluminescent element on that side away from the transparent conductive layer. The phosphor layer does not exceed 100Á, and may comprise ZnS activated by Cu, Ag or Au.
