Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises an oleaginous liquid thickened with a combination of a lithium soap and an initially hydrophilic clay. The oleaginous liquid may be mineral oil, hydrogenated fish oil, animal oil, vegetable oil, fluorocarbon oil, e.g. a perfluorinated petroleum oil, a synthetic lubricating oil prepared by cracking and polymerizing products of the Fischer-Tropsch process, or other synthetic lubricating oil, e.g. silicones, aliphatic ethers, aromatic acid esters, aliphatic mono- and dicarboxylic acid esters, phosphorus acid esters and halogenated aromatic compounds. The lithium soap may be derived from a fat or fatty acid containing a straight chain of at least 8 carbon atoms. The clays are naturally occurring chemically unmodified clays in purified form, and are complex inorganic silicates containing cation-exchangeable groups, suitable clays being attapulgite, illite, saponite, sepiolite, biotite, vermiculite, bentonite, hectorite and zeolites. These may be used directly in their inherent hydrophilic form. Optional ingredients mentioned are anti-wear agents and antioxidants. The greases are preferably blended at 200-350 DEG F. under super-atmospheric pressure. In examples, greases are prepared from (i) mineral oil, colloidal attapulgite, hydrogenated soybean fatty acids, lithium hydroxide and water; and (ii) iso-octyl adipate, colloidal attapulgite, and lithium stearate at 300 DEG F. and a pressure of 700 lb. per sq. in. Specification 759,304 is referred to.ALSO:A grease composition comprises a liquid polyorganosiloxane thickened with a combination of a lithium soap and an initially hydrophilic clay. Siloxanes disclosed are the dimethyl, diethyl, ethylphenyl and methylphenyl siloxanes. The lithium soaps are those of fats and fatty acids containing a straight chain of at least 8 carbon atoms. The clays are naturally occurring, chemically unmodified complex inorganic silicates containing cation-exchangeable groups, e.g. attapulgite, illite, saponite, sepiolite, biotite, vermiculite, bentonite, hectorite and zeolites. The greases are preferably blended at 200-350 DEG F. under superatmospheric pressure and may incorporate anti-wear agents and antioxidants. Specification 759,304, [Group III], is referred to.
