Abstract
794,555. Purifying benzene. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 13, 1956, No. 34641/56. Drawings to Specifcation. Class 2 (3). Benzene, contaminated with up to 6 mol. per cent of olefinic hydrocarbon impurities but substantially free of saturated hydrocarbons, is purified by washing at 60-200‹ F. with 20-67 per cent of its weight of 80-90 weight per cent aqueous sulphuric acid, separating the benzene from the resulting acid layer containing converted impurities, washing the benzene with aqueous caustic alkali and distilling. The starting material may contain 3-6 mol. per cent alkenes and dienes, for example a 94-97 mol. per cent pure benzene may contain 2-5 per cent hexenes, 0.1-1 per cent C 6 dienes, a trace-0.2 per cent acetylenes and nil-0.5 per cent paraffins. The acid treating may be carried out for 1.5-5 minutes. The caustic wash to remove acidic material is carried out with 10-20 per cent caustic alkali at 280- 300‹ F. The benzene is again separated and fractionated to give 99+ mol. per cent pure benzene. Specification 722,180 is referred to.
