Abstract

794,516. Selenium rectifiers. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and FRENCH, E. L. May 4, 1956 [june 15, 1955], No. 17189/55. Class 37. In a selenium rectifier an artificial barrier layer consisting of one or more saccharides is provided between the Se and the counter electrode. A saccharide is defined as a watersoluble monosaccharide or a water-soluble substance which on hydrolysis produces one or more monosaccharides. Examples given are D-glucose, galactose, xylose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, raffinose, maltose, starch and inulin. Such a layer, e.g. of D-glucose, may be provided by immersing a base-plate coated with crystalline Se with its plane vertical for 1 minute in a 1 per cent solution in water of D-glucose maintained at 80‹ C. and then withdrawing slowly while subjecting the plate to radiant heat. To ensure uniformity of the layer a wetting agent for Se, e.g. about 0.02 per cent by weight gelatine is mixed with the solution. The layer thickness is varied by altering the solution concentration. A counter electrode is applied to the dried barrier layer and the device electroformed.
