Abstract

794,456. Making wire. KENMORE, H. Jan. 12, 1956, No. 1077/56. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] An electric conductor wire has a steel core 10, Fig. 1A, covered with an inner plating 101 of 1 to 10 per cent by weight of copper and an outer protective plating 102 of 2 to 15 per cent by weight of zinc, lead or aluminium. An intermediate layer 103 of ¢ to 5 per cent by weight of nickel may also be added between the copper and the outer plating to prevent alloying and the resultant lowering of the conductivity. A steel bar 10, Fig. 2, with a carbon content of 0.05 to 0.7 per cent is formed to a helical coil 101 over a guide 50 after hardening in a drawing die 31 and straightening in rolls 40. The coil is suspended by rollers 260 which are rotatably driven to feed the coil continuously through the various baths 70-80 for cleaning, washing and plating. The resultant wire may be drawn down to the required size in a number of steps without any annealing. Specification 775,769 is referred to.
