Abstract

794,376. Making composite pipes; coiling; welding. INTERNATIONALE SIEGWARTBALKEN-GES. Jan. 25, 1956 [Feb. 5, 1955; Nov. 9, 1955], No. 2454/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] Concrete, asbestos cement and like pipes are made gas and water tight by helically coiling a thin strip of metal which is welded or cemented at its edges to form a liquid-tight shell. In one example a strip 5, Fig. 2, is coiled on a pipe 1 with its edges overlapping or abutting over a conductor strip 2 which is helically wound on a recess in the pipe. One roller electrode 6 engages the conductor 2 and the other roller electrode 7 engages and welds the strip edges. In another example, a strip 15, Fig. 3, with flanged edges 151, 152 is coiled over a pipe 11 and the abutting edges are welded by a burner 20. The strip 11 may be formed into channel section by a pair of rolls 18, 19 (not shown), as it is fed to the coiling machine. The heat generated during welding may be conducted away by giving the pipe an initial covering of aluminium by painting, spraying or wound strip. The tube may be finally given a stressed helical reinforcement or a layer of cement mortar or glass wool impregnated with bitumen.
