Abstract

1448472 Reinforced tube CREATORS Ltd 30 July 1974 [11 Aug 1973] 38134/73 Heading F2P A tube is formed from a reinforcing member of wire like form 11 and a strip of thermoplastics material 10, simultaneously helically wound on a former with the edge portions of adjacent turns of the strip overlapping one another and with the reinforcing member situated between the strip and the former. The overlapping edge portions and the reinforcing member are heat sealed together the sealed overlap of the edge portions being restricted to a sector bounded by an arc 13, subtending an angle of not more than 100 degrees at the centre of the reinforcing member 11. The reinforcing member 11 may be a wire which is covered by a thermoplastics material 12 which is conveniently the same material as the wall of thermoplastics strip 10, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. The helical reinforcing member 11 has the same pitch as the helically wound strip 10 and heat sealing at the overlap is achieved by heating the strip 10 and the wire covering 12 and then passing them through the nip of grooved forming rollers. A tape suitable for forming the thermoplastics wall 10 of the tube can have the crosssection shown in Fig. 2 with increases in section thickness at the edges 14, and in the centre 15. The additional thickness at the edge 14 allows for any thinning of the material during heat sealing. For making tubes of large diameters or of non-circular cross-sections the adjustable former described in Specification 1,445,427 may be used.
