A reinforced flexible hose, e.g. for vacuum cleaners, includes a helix of self-supporting material, and a flexible wall comprising one or more plastics strips covering the helix, the hose being characterized by a plurality of longitudinally reinforcing cords disposed directly over the inner strip either substantially parallel or skewed at an angle of up to about 30 degrees to the hose axis; and one or more helically disposed elements located over the longitudinally reinforcing cords between the turns of the helix and containing the inner strip and longitudinally reinforcing cords radially inwardly between the helix turns to impart a corrugated form to the wall structure. As shown a helix of steel wire 10 coated with a layer of vinyl plastics 11 is covered by a helically wound single strip of vinyl plastics 13 with its turns overlapping. Disposed over this, preferably perpendicular to the turns of the helix 10 are reinforcing cords 14 preferably up to 10 disposed around the circumference of the hose. Helically wound at each side of the helix 10 are two cords 15, 16 acting to cause the cords 14 and strip 13 to form corrugations around the helix 10. Around the hose thus formed are helically wound at least one strip (as shown, 17, 18) with overlapping turns. In the specific embodiment each strip 17, 18 covers three coils of the helix 10. The strips 13, 17, 18 and coating 11 may be fused together by means of a solvent or by heat.
