Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the seamed pipe to be produced at high efficiency to a high quality equivalent to that of electric-welded tubes by locally heating the butt edge parts of an open pipe formed from heated skelp up to its melting temperature and pressure contacting said parts with pressure rolls provided with a circumferential groove on the portion corresponding to the edge part.
CONSTITUTION: The skelp 2 having been heated to about 1000 to 1300°C in a heating furnace 1 is formed to an open pipe 2a by perpendicular forming rolls 3. Next, the pipe is introduced into a heating unit such as high frequency induction heating unit 4 or the like, where both edge parts 2b are locally heated to a melting temperature of about 1400°C. Thereafter, these parts are bonded immediately by horizontal pressure rolls 5 provided with a circumferential groove 8 in the portion opposing to the pipe seam part. The pipe then subsequently pass through drawing rolls 61, 62... whereby it is drawn to a desired size. AT the amset, the outside beads 2C overhanging to the circumferential groove 8 are cut away with a bead cutter 7.
