794,196. Selenium rectifiers. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and COOPER, G. Jan. 5, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3368/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. A selenium rectifier comprises a layer of selenium on a base-plate, a lacquer artificial barrier layer formed by dipping and surrounding the selenium covered base-plate, a counterelectrode and a layer of sulphur, selenium or tellurium or any mixture thereof formed by vacuum deposition on the barrier layer beneath the counter electrode. In the embodiment a barrier layer of ethoxylene resin is deposited over the Se layer and base-plate by dipping the plate in a solution of the resin in xylene and withdrawing it slowly at 110‹ C. with its plane vertical. A second layer of Se is then vaporized on the resin layer over the first Se layer at 250‹ C. and under a pressure of 1-3 Á of mercury, and a tin cadmium alloy counter electrode applied in known manner.
