Abstract

793,402. Welding by pressure. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 8, 1956 [May 10, 1955], No. 14310/56. Class 83 (4). In cold pressure welding a butt-joint between two coaxial tubes of similar cross-section, the tubes are both supported internally and externally and are held accurately in alignment during welding. The tubes 24, 25, Fig. 2, are supported on inner dies 14, 15 mounted on a guide bar 20, and are clamped by split external dies 12, 13 having conical outer surfaces engaging in conical apertures in carriages 16, 17. Movement of the carriages 16, 17 together exerts clamping pressure on the external dies 12, 13 and welds the tubes until the dies contact each other. During welding the metal of the projecting ends of the tubes is forced sideways into recesses 22, 23 in the dies. In a modification, Fig. 5, the carriages 36, 37 carrying the dies are guided by a pin-andsleeve 38, 39. The inner dies 42, 43 are supported in the external dies 31, 32 which have projecting cylindrical portions 33, 34 which during welding slidingly fit within a fixed guide ring 35. The carriages may be power or hand actuated. When welding tubes of differing now characteristics such as two aluminium tubes of different hardness or a copper and an aluminium tube, the harder tube 50, Fig. 8, is formed with a grooved end, and the softer tube 51 with a rounded end to equalize the amount of metal which each supplies to the weld. Specifications 689,927 and 728,139 are referred to.
