Abstract

The heat stability of branched chain polyamide resins is improved by incorporating in the resin from 0.3 to 1.0 per cent based on the weight of the resin of one or more of the following phosphorous-containing acids or alkyl or aryl esters thereof: orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid and phosphorous acid. The branched-chain polyamides are derived from a mixture of dimeric and trimeric fatty acids, e.g. polymerized linoleic acid with or without a minor proportion of one or more carboxylic acids, e.g. adipic acid, sebacic acid, iso- and tere-phthalic acid or rosin dimer and polyamines, e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, propylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, p-phenylene diamine, p,p1-diamino-diphenyl methane or triethylene tetramine. The examples describe the addition of phosphorous acid, pyro-phosphoric acid, tributyl phosphite, phosphoric acid, triphenyl phosphite, trimethyl phosphate and triphenyl phosphate to polyamides derived from polymerized linoleic acid and diethylene triamine.
