Abstract
An epoxy fatty acid or ester thereof containing an average of 1-2 epoxy groups per molecule and being substantially free from terminal epoxy groups is polymerized by reaction with approximately the stoichiometric amount (defined as one carboxyl group or one anhydride group per epoxy group) of a polybasic acid or a polybasic acid monoanhydride. Suitable epoxy starting materials are epoxidized oils or epoxidized fatty acids or their esters, e.g. epoxidized cottonseed, castor, linseed, lard, soybean, rapeseed, perilla or menhaden oil, or methyl epoxystearate. Suitable polybasic acids are maleic, fumaric, oxalic, malonic, succinic, malic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, p suberic, azelaic, sebacic, phthalic, diglycollic, tartaric, boric, sulphuric, phosphoric, benzene disulphonic, monoalkyl phosphoric, citric, aconitic, tricarballylic and prehnitic acid. Suitable anhydrides are maleic, phthalic, tetrachlorophthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, 1, 3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid anhydride, and citraconic anhydride. In Examples (1), 1 mol of methyl epoxystearate was heated with 1 mol of endo-cis-bicyclo (2, 2, 1)-5-heptene-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid anhydride until an exothermic reaction began. The mixture was held at 150 DEG C. for four hours. The cooled gel was soluble in benzene, chloroform or diethyl ether and was a useful plasticizer for alkyd resins; (2) methyl epoxystearate was similarly polymerized with phthalic anhydride to a viscous oil; (3) epoxidized lard oil was polymerized with fumaric acid to a viscous oil. The products are useful as rubber substitutes, moulding, casting and laminating resins or as additives to natural and synthetic rubber. Polymers formed with inorganic acids or anhydrides are less stable and may decompose to a sticky paste. They may be employed together with a stabilizer in plastic or rubber compositions or may be used in crystallization of salts or in fertilizers or insecticides. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 781,416, 783,740 and 819,194.
