Abstract

1,136,316. Polyamides. VICTOR WOLF Ltd. 18 April, 1967, No. 17631/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division B2] Polyamides are derived by condensation of a predominantly dimerized fatty acid together with some aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with isophorone diamine or a mixture thereof with an aliphatic polyamine in substantially equivalent proportions of carboxyl to amine groups, the major proportion of the carboxyl groups being contributed by the polymeric fatty acid. The acids may be used in the form of anhydrides or esters. The monocarboxylic acid may be a straight or branched chain acid having up to 18 carbon atoms and may be substituted (e.g. lactic acid). Up to 15wt. per cent of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. sebacic or adipic, may also be used. Specified aliphatic polyamines are ethylene and propylene diamines, diethylene triamine and triethylene tetramine. The resins are soluble in methylated spirits and may be used for printing inks, adhesives and coatings. The products of the examples had acid values from 2À9 to 6À4, amine values from 2À2 to 6À4 and softening points from 80 to 138. In Examples 8 and 9 the resins are used with TiO 2 and (9 only) nitrocellulose to formulate printing inks. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 976,007.
