Abstract
1308827 Copolyamides; curing epoxy resins VICTOR WOLF Ltd 28 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 27134/70 Headings C3B and C3R Copolyamides are obtained by condensing a polyamide with a dimerized fatty acid and diphenylol propane diacid in the presence of a monocarboxylic acid. An alkanolamine, polyol or hydroxyacid may also be included as a comonomer. The dimer acid must provide the major proportion of the carboxyl groups. Various diamines are specified as the polyamine, diaminoalkanes being preferred; minor proportions of aromatic, cycloaliphatic or polyalkylene polyamines may also be used, e.g. phenylene, xylylene or isophorone diamine or diethylene triamine. The dimer acids may be hydrogenated. Specified monocarboxylic acid include C 2-22 aliphatic acids, aromatic acids and the hydroxy acids lactic and glycollic. No alkanolamines or polyols are exemplified. The products are stated to have good solubility in propanol with reduced tendency to gel and be suitable for flexographic and groove inks or coating compositions. The polymers are usually prepared from reactants providing equal numbers of carboxyl and amino plus alcoholic OH groups (ignoring the phenolic OH of diphenylol propane diacid as non- reactive) but excess diamine and triamine may be used to give reactive polyamides useful for curing epoxy resins.
