Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel oil boiling in the range 75 DEG F. to 750 DEG F contains 0.00005% to 0.5% by weight of a tetraalkyl ammonium salt of a carboxylic acid having one or more hydroxy groups, and one or more carboxyl groups, and 2 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule, and in which the alkyl groups of the tetraalkyl ammonium group each contain 1 to 24 carbon atoms. The fuel may be a gasoline, kerosene, turbo-jet fuel, diesel fuel or heating oil. In examples turbo-jet aviation fuel contains mono-(trimethylsoya-ammonium) malate, di-(trimethylsoya-ammonium) malate, trimethylsoya-ammonium glycolate, mono-(trimethylsoya - ammonium) tartrate, trimethylsoya-ammonium lactate, dimethyldisoya-ammonium gallate, trimethylsoya - ammonium gallate, mono-(trimethylsoya-ammonium) citrate, di-methyldisoya-ammonium gluconate and tri-methylsoya-ammonium gluconate, and heating oil contains trimethylsoya - ammonium gluconate and di-(trimethylsoya-ammonium) malate (the "soya" group is derived from soy bean oil). Lists of suitable acids and tetraalkyl ammonium groups are given.
