Abstract
793,040. Automatic circuit-breakers; arcing- preventing in switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 24, 1955 [June 25, 1954], No. 18705/54. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker has main contacts (not shown), auxiliary contacts 15 ... 17, means for operating the main contacts (not shown), a closing spring 26 for the auxiliary contacts and latch means for retaining the spring charged, the spring being charged and the auxiliary contacts opened during a closing operation of the main contacts and the latch being released on the initial opening movement of the operating means for the main contacts so that the auxiliary contacts are closed by the spring 26 before the main contacts open. Though the energy for closing the auxiliary contacts is provided by the main contact operating means and is used during an opening operation of the main contacts so that the opening of the main contacts is not retarded. An inductive load may be supplied through the main contacts, the auxiliary contacts closing a discharge circuit just before the main contacts open. In the arrangement shown, when the opening operation of the main contacts is initiated, a member 25 is caused to turn in the direction of the arrow and a pawl 20 is driven to cause a lever 19 to move anticlockwise about a pivot 18 and break a toggle formed by levers 19, 22. A lever 14 is then free to turn about its pivot 11 under the bias of the spring 26 which closes the contacts 15 ... 17. To avoid incorrect operation and to ensure that the closing of the auxiliary contacts is followed by the opening of the main contacts, a lever 33 is turned about its pivot 11 by the lever 22 as the toggle 19, 22 collapses. The lever 33 turns a lever 35 which turns a lever 38 to trip the main contacts. After the contacts 15 ... 17 have closed, the further movement of the member 25 permits a pin 24 to move along a slot 22a in the lever 22 so that no force is transmitted through the lever 22 and the toggle is reset by a spring 27b. The turning of the member 25 clockwise when the main contacts are reclosed restores the path to the position shown.
