Abstract

905,639. Automatic circuit-breakers. CRABTREE & CO. Ltd., J. A. May 25, 1960 [June 16, 1959; Feb. 3, 1960], Nos. 20564/59 and 3772/60. Class 38 (5). A " moulded case " circuit-breaker comprises a pair of substantially flat casing members in recesses between which are housed contacts 29, 30 and an overload-responsive electromagnetically-tripped mechanism adapted to be reset automatically after a tripping operation and including a main spring 35 acting on a contact arm 17 connected to one end of a toggle 27, 28, the other end of which is connected to an operating handle 3, and a trip lever 24 loaded by a spring 31 and having releasable latching engagement with a catch plate 20. The trip lever 24 is released to break the toggle by the impact or impacts of an armature 15 on the plate 20 so that the force necessary to cause tripping is dependent only on the strength of the spring 31 and not that of the main spring 35 which provides adequate contact pressure. The armature 15 extends through a rectangular opening 20a in the bent end of the catch plate 20 and has an aperture which passes freely over the shank of a rivet 14 to provide a floating location for the armature on an L-shaped magnet frame 13. Extending through the frame 13 is a sealed tube 4 containing a ferrous plunger 6 and a spring 7 operating in a liquid. Under small overload conditions tripping is delayed until the plunger 6 has been moved against the bias of the spring 7 towards a polepiece 18, but under short circuit conditions the armature 15 is attracted without delay. A short ferrous sleeve 12 may surround the righthand end of the tube 4 to assist in completing the magnetic circuit. The main spring 35 in addition to providing the force necessary to open the contacts when tripping occurs, also provides contact pressure as the pivot 32 of the contact arm 17 is movable in slots 32x formed in the casing members.
