A brake for a power press comprises a disc 30 coupled to a press operating member by a shaft 28 which is adapted normally to be clamped between a stationary brake plate 42 and a movable brake plate 62 urged together by the action of springs 66, the brake being released by the supply of pressure fluid through conduits 144 and 130 to flex an annular diaphragm 76. When the brake is applied by springs 66, it may be " inched " by a motor driving the worm 76 which meshes with worm wheel 16. In order that greater pressure may be exerted to clamp the plate 30 when it is required that the press shall do work during the inching period, pressure fluid may be supplied through conduits 142 and 112 to an annular space 92 where it produces a force on the movable plate 62 which assists the springs 66.
