Abstract

792,777. Door fastenings. EVANS, O. (Ostroff, H. S.). Nov. 15, 1955, No. 32702/55. Class 44 A door operating means includes a latch bar 3 pivotally mounted on the inside of the door 4 for oscillation between a closed position, in which it engages a keeper 12 mounted on the door frame 13, and an open position in which it is disengaged from the keeper, means associated with the latch bar so that on rotation of the bar in one direction to a prescribed position, it may be moved axially and then rotated in the opposite direction to assume a locked position in which it is inhibited again bscillation to the open position and means for oscillating the latch bar from outside the door. The latch bar 3 made of round steel rod, is supported on the inside of the door 4 by means of a cylindrical bracket 5 provided with two apertures 6, 7. One aperture 6 provides a circular bearing for the bar so that the bar can be swung into or out of engagement with a keeper 12 and the other aperture 7 is a slot the ends of which limit the swinging movement of the bar 3. The end of the bar is bent to form a lever 8 by means of which the bar can be rotated, swung and moved axially. When the lever 8 is parallel to the surface of the door a radial key 9 on the bar 5 limits its axial movement but when the lever 8 is moved perpendicular to the door surface the key is brought into alignment with a notch 10 in the aperture 6 so that the end which engages the keeper can be moved through a hole 16 in the keeper. The keeper is formed of sheet metal and is bent. to define a recess 14 for retaining the end of the bar 3, the hole 16 being in the wall of the recess 14 which faces the bar 3. An inclined guide 15 is formed on the keeper to guide the bar into the recess. When the bar is not engaged with the hole 16 it can be swung to release it from the recess 14 from the outside of the door by means of a handle 26 secured to a shaft 22. The shaft 22 is journalled in a sleeve 23 integral with the bracket 5 and a plate 24 is secured to the inner end of the shaft, te plate having a bridge 25 projecting from it and straddling the bar 3. Thus when the handle 26 is turned the bar 3 is raised by the bridge 25. On the outside of the door the sleeve 23 and the shaft 22 have apertures 27 which' register when the handle is in its neutral position so that a padlock 29 can be inserted through the aperture 27 to immobilize the handle 26, Such immobilizing of the handle 26 does not prevent operation of the bar 3 from the inside of the door. Complete withdrawal of the bar 3 from the bracket 5 is prevented by means of a lug 18. The keeper 12 is provided with a hole 30 in which the padlock can be hung when not in use and the hole 30 is positioned so that it can take the place of the hole 16 when the device is used on a door of opposite hand.
