792,439. Welding by fusion. AIR REDUCTION CO., Inc. May 23, 1956 [May 27, 1955], No. 15947/56. Class 83 (4). An electric arc-welding process consists in forming an arc between an electrode E and a workpiece W within a mass of solid carbon dioxide. Deoxidizing agents such as aluminium powder, alloying additions and arcstabilizing agents may be added to the solid carbon dioxide. Mild steel may be welded with a deoxidized steel wire using reverse polarity direct current. The process is applicable to the welding of stainless steel and aluminium. Non-consuming electrodes, such as carbon, may be used. For manual welding granular solid carbon dioxide is discharged from a hopper around the electrode but for mechanical welding the carbon dioxide is discharged in front of the electrode by a screw-feed from a hopper or by a device which granulates a solid mass of carbon dioxide. Alternatively, pressurized liquid carbon dioxide may be expanded to provide the solid form. Specification 791,459 is referred to.
