839,661. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN RESEARCH. & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Jan. 16, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1968]; No. 2330/58. Class 83 (4). In electric arc welding an aluminium or aluminium alloy workpiece using an automatically fed aluminium electrode, initiation of the arc is assisted by powdered or fragmentary aluminium located between the workpiece and the electrode. The aluminium may be deposited on the workpiece in the form of powder chips or as a slurry with a liquid such as alcohol. Alternatively where the arc is gas-shielded, e.g. by argon, powdered aluminium may be entrained in the shielding gas. A gun 3 for gas-shielded arc spot welding and having a nozzle 4 with gas outlet apertures 6 is controlled by a timing circuit 16 which a predetermined time after the arc strikes stops the electrode feed motor 13. The current is subsequently disconnected by the timing circuit 16 or the arc is extinguished due to burn-back of the electrode 8.
