Abstract

1,195,420. Control circuits for arc welding. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 1 Nov., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967], No. 51055/67. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] Circuit for an arc welding system includes a first supply for striking an arc and providing ionization current, and a second supply which provides the welding current and is controlled by a feedback device responsive to the welding current. As shown in Fig. 1, a first supply through diodes 1-6 and a ballast resistor 17 is connected between a non-consumable electrode 31 and the nozzle 32 of a welding torch, between which an arc is struck. Plasma in the nozzle 32 is shielded by inert gas fed through an outer nozzle 33, and the arc is transferred to a workpiece 34 which is connected to the second supply through a choke 15 and a thyristor bridge 14. The current from the second supply is sampled by a device 16 which, through a transistor 24, controls the firing angles of the thyristors 7-12, thus controlling the welding current. The circuit may be adapted for a TIG welding system. The nozzle 32 is then not present and the terminal D is connected directly to the workpiece.
