Abstract

792,008. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 11, 1956 [Oct. 11, 1955], No. 28968/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A method of making a compression joint between the ends of two lengths of wire comprises serrating the inner surface of a sleeve 1 of malleable metal having a cylindrical bore by forming longitudinally circumferentially and/or helically extending grooves 2 in the inner surface, filling the grooves with an abrasive powder 3 but leaving the bore unobstructed, inserting the ends of the wires to be jointed into the ends of the sleeve and compressing the latter on to those ends. The grooves may be of V- or U-shaped cross-section and may consist of both left-handed and right-handed screw threads of short pitch intersecting at a large angle, e.g. between 45 and 90 degrees. The depth of the grooves do not exceed <SP>1</SP>/ 30 sec. of an inch. For jointing copper conductors the sleeve is a copper base alloy; for jointing hightensile galvanized steel strand, a copper-free aluminium base alloy is used and where two single galvanized steel wires or rods are to be jointed a steel sleeve is used. The abrasive powder may be carborundum powder, emery powder, beryllium copper powder, or alumina particles and is held in the grooves by an adhesive, e.g. shellac.
