Abstract

Compositions containing fibrous glass and polystyrene or copolymers of styrene with butadiene, acrylonitrile, a - methyl styrene, nuclear substituted styrene and vinyl naphthalene or mixtures thereof with natural and synthetic rubbers, are obtained by coating the glass with a polymer emulsion, a suspension of 40 mesh to 30 micron particle size or an emulsion containing added polystyrene particles of this size, to give a dried composition containing at least 65 per cent polystyrene and not more than 35 per cent fibrous glass. After coating the fibres may be cut into lengths and, if desired, mixed with further polymer pellets to form a composition which may be injection moulded. The emulsions may contain wetting agents or thickeners such as morpholine oleate, sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, alkali metal, ammonium and morpholine salts of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids, bentonite and clays, pigments and dyes. In examples, glass roving, mat, yarn or cloth, which may be chrome sized, is coated by running it continuously through the polymer bath.
