Abstract

A blowing agent composition comprises a major proportion of azodicarbonamide and a minor proportion of an alkarylsulphonhydrazide of the formula <FORM:1123823/C3/1> where R1 to R5 are selected from hydrogen, alkyl and hydroxy or chloro-substituted alkyl, at least one being alkyl or substituted alkyl. Specified sulphonhydrazides, whose effect is to lower the decomposition temperature of the azodicarbonamide, are p-toluene-, o-toluene-, p-ethylphenyl -, and 2,4 - dimethylphenyl-sulphonhydrazides, and specified substituted alkyl groups are hydroxymethyl, hydroxyethyl and chloroethyl. Preferably the sulphonhydrazides are used in amounts of 10 to 50% of the weight of azodicarbonamide. Specified resins which may be expanded using this blowing agent are vinyl chloride, styrene, propylene, butadiene, chloroprene, and acrylonitrile polymers, and also rubbers and polyamides. The blowing agents are preferably used in amounts of 1 to 15% by weight of the polymer, and decompose at 160 DEG to 165 DEG C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,012,861.ALSO:A polymeric material, which is foamed using a blowing agent composition consisting of azodicarbonamide and an alkarylsulphonhydrazide, may be foamed by spreading a mixture of polymeric material and the blowing agent on a metal plate, a polyvinyl chloride sheet or a fabric backing, and heating either statically or on a moving belt passing through an oven. Specified polymeric materials are polymers of vinyl chloride, styrene, butadiene, chloroprene, propylene, acrylonitrile, acrylates and methacrylates and polyamides, and natural or synthetic rubbers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,012,861.
