Abstract

A liquid coating composition contains a plurality of pre-formed particles of organic polymeric multi-celled foam dispersed in a liquid vehicle containing a film-forming adhesive which acts as a binder for the foam particles. The foam particles, which are preferably pigmented, may be, for example, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane foams. The liquid vehicle is suitably an oil-in-water emulsion of a vulcanizable natural or synthetic rubber used in admixture with a vulcanizing agent, and is preferably colourless. The composition may also contain flock or short fibres. The foam particles are preferably less than 3/32 of an inch long, and may be produced by mechanical shredding, or by foaming small droplets of a pre-foam plastisol to obtain spherical droplets. Shredding may be aided by incorporating salt or steam into the foam when it is polymerized, residual salt being leached out after shredding. The coatings thus produced have acoustical and thermal insulating properties, and may be decoratively useful if pigmented foam particles are used. The binder may be an acrylic copolymer, e.g. a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate, or a styrene/butylacrylate copolymer, or a rubber, e.g. a styrene-butadiene copolymer or neoprene.ALSO:Cloth or metal is coated with a liquid coating composition containing a plurality of preformed particles of organic polymeric multicelled foam dispersed in a liquid vehicle containing a film-forming adhesive which acts as a binder for the foam particles. The foam particles, which are preferably pigmented, may be, for example, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane foams. The liquid vehicle is suitably an oil-in-water emulsion of a vulcanisable natural or synthetic rubber used in admixture with a vulcanising agent, and is preferably colorless. The composition may also contain flock or short fibres. The foam particles are preferably less than 3/32 of an inch long, and may be produced by mechanical shredding, or by foaming small droplets of a pre-foam plastisol to obtain spherical droplets. Shredding may be aided by incorporating salt or steam into the foam. When it is polymerised, residual salt being leached out after shredding. The coatings thus produced have acoustical and thermal insulating properties, and may be decoratively useful if pigmented foam particles are used. The binder may be an acrylic copolymer, e.g. a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate, or a styrene/butyl acrylate copolymer, or a rubber, e.g. a styrene-butadiene copolymer or neoprene. The compositions may be applied to cloth or metal by spraying, knife coating or roller coating.
