Abstract

1,206,993. Flame-resistant foamed materials. REVERTEX Ltd. 28 Jan., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6616/68. Heading B2E. A flexible, cellular foamed material having open 'interconnecting cells is treated to impart flame-resistance thereto by impregnating with a solution or dispersion of a polymer which also contains solid particles of a compound which generates a non-combustible gas upon heating, drying the impregnated foam, so that the walls are coated with a layer of the polymer in which the particles are dispersed, the polymer being such that the flexibility of. the foamed material is not impaired. The impregnation may be effected by squeezing the foam through rollers immersed in a bath of the polymer emulsion or solution and allowing it to expand while immersed in the bath and then passing it through more rollers which express excess liquid. The polymer may be a homopolymer of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride or vinylidenechloride or hompolymers of these. The polymer may be plasticised particularly with plasticisers having fire-(retardant properties such as trichloroethyl phosphate, tritolyl phosphate and trixylyl phospate. The compound for generating the non-combustible gas may be magnesium carbonate, sodium carbonate, gypsum hydrate, alumina hydrate or an organic compound generating nitrogen on heating. The foam material may be of polyurethane.
