Abstract
1,259,624. Coated paper. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 20 March, 1969 [4 April, 1968], No. 14608/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Coated paper, is made by dissolving one or more pigment binders of which at least one is a vinyl addition polymer comprising an interpolymer of 23 to 40 mole percent of a cyclic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride, 77 to 40 mole percent of at least one mono vinyl aromatic monomer, 0 to 35 mole percent of at least one alkyl acrylate or alkyl methacrylate the alkyl groups of which contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms and 0 to 20 mole percent of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or both, in an aqueous solution containing at least one nitrogenous base or alkali metal hydroxide, mixing the solution with a finely divided pigment in a proportion to provide at least 5 parts by weight of the vinyl addition polymer for each 100 parts by weight of pigment and applying the mixture as a coating layer to at least one side of a sheet of paper, and drying and finishing the coated sheet. The paper may be a sheet or web of a fibrous material which may be of cellulose or non-cellulosic.
