1275587 Coated sheet material EASTMAN KODAK CO 21 Nov 1969 [25 Nov 1968] 57115/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] A hardened coating of a mixture of gelatin and a water-soluble synthetic polymer on a support is prepared by mixing, with an aqueous mixture comprising gelatin and a hardener which is an isoxazolium salt or a carbodiimide, a water-soluble synthetic polymer, coating the resulting mixture on the support and drying the coating. The amount of hardener is preferably 0.5-10% by weight based on the amount of gelatin and polymer. Hardeners specified are 2, 5-dimethylisoxazolium p-toluenesulphonate and diisopropylcarbodiimide. The water-soluble synthetic polymer is preferably a carboxyl-containing polymer containing 10-90 mole% of acrylic acid units, 90-10 mole% of alkyl acrylate units and 0-40 mole% of units derived from an ethylenically unsaturated copolymerisable monomer. The polymer may be in the form of a water soluble salt and may comprise 20-80% by weight of the gelatin-polymer binder. The gelatin-hardener mixture is preferably held for at least 30 seconds before admixture with the water-soluble synthetic polymer.
