Abstract

A process for the production of mixed ammonium nitrate fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate and at least one other soil additive comprises mixing the said additive with molten ammonium nitrate, solidifying the mixture as a thin sheet and granulating the sheet to obtain the mixed fertilizer in any desired particle size. The term "soil additive" is used to include fertilizers, e.g. ammonium sulphate, superphosphates, or sodium and potassium nitrates; timing agents, e.g., calcium carbonate; or conditioning agents, e.g., gypsum, calcium sulphate hydrochloride and magnesium carbonate. The process is preferably a continuous one in which the additional soil additive is preheated and added to molten ammonium nitrate so that the mixture remains at such a temperature that it is still free flowing, which mixture is run into a flat, moving endless belt, which is preferably water-cooled, and from which the mixture in a solid sheet is passed to a granulator.
