Abstract

A process for producing a mixed fertilizer containing ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate comprises mixing calcium carbonate with molten ammonium nitrate in the presence of at least 1% of ammonium monohydrogen phosphate or potassium monohydrogen phosphate, solidifying the mixture and granulating. The process reduces the loss of nitrogen from the fertilizer following the admixture of ammonium nitrate with the calcium carbonate. Preferably the granulation is carried out by flowing the molten mixture on to a moving, flat endless belt on which it solidifies and is then granulated to the required particle size. The monohydrogen phosphates are added per se to the mixture of ammonium nitrate either beofre, with or after the calcium carbonate, but the ammonium monohydrogen phosphate may also be formed in situ in the molten ammonium nitrate by adding phosphoric acid to the nitric acid in the production of the ammonium nitrate or by adding phosphate rock to the nitric acid in the same process. Any form of calcium carbonate, including limestones with at least 95% calcium carbonate content, may be used in the process of the invention; the dolomitic limestones do not cause the high nitrogen loss experienced on adding pure or commercial calcium carbonate to ammonium nitrate. The calcium carbonate is added to molten ammonium nitrate at temperatures such that the mixture remains fluid enough to be run on to the flat belt for solidification, e.g. temperatures above 350 DEG C.
