Abstract

791,513. Corrugating. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and PENROSE, J. R. Jan. 31, 1955 [Feb. 1, 1954], No. 2916/54. Class 83 (4). A cable sheath is helically corrugated by the relative rotation around the sheath and in engagement therewith of a member having a concave working surface inclined to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the sheath, as the cable sheath moves axially relative to the corrugating member. A metal sheath 12 covering an electric cable core 13 is helically corrugated by the rotation therearound of a head 1 carrying, in bearings 22 in a block 21, an annular corrugating member 23, surrounding the sheath but eccentric thereto and inclined, at the helix angle of the corrugations, to a plane normal to the axis of the sheath. The inclination of the member 23 feeds the sheath axially during the corrugating although the sheath may be pulled. The eccentricity of the annular member 23 is adjusted by a screw 24 bearing on the block 21. The diameter of the circular aperture in the annular member 23 may be less than the overall diameter of the corrugated sheath and the radius of curvature of the profile of the rim of the aperture is less than the desired radius of curvature at the root of the corrugations. The sheath 12 is supported just prior to the point of corrugation by an external bush 14 and an internal plug 31, hollow to accommodate the cable core 13, the plug being urged back by the squeezing action of the corrugating member, such movement being resisted by friction, fluid pressure or spring means. More than one corrugating tool may be carried by the head 1 to act successively, or simultaneously to produce ccrrugations having two or more starts. The corrugating tool may be in the form of an arc B, Fig. 1. The sheath may be rotated and the tool kept stationary. The machine may be combined with apparatus for forming cable sheath from metal strip as described, for instance, in Specification 711,305. Specification 791,514 also is referred to.
