Abstract
782,535. Sheathing electric cables; corrugating. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd. April 20, 1956 [May 25, 1955], No. 15060/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] An electric cable is made by introducing the core 1 into a metal sheath 2 of larger diameter and then forming in the sheath two or more flutes 10 which project inwardly to bear on the cone. The cable extends through a central aperture in a plate 4 carrying rollers 6 in bearing brackets 5. Each roller has a circumferential groove 7 round which extends a rib 9, and the rollers are positioned so that adjacent bevels 8 bear against each other so that the sheath is completely encircled. The cable is drawn through the rollers to form the flutes 10, which may be made helical by relative rotation between the cable and the plate 4. The ribs 9 may be adjustable to allow for different depths of flute, in which case each roller comprises two elements 24 rotatable about a fixed axle 25. A ring 26 between the elements is mounted on an eccentric portion 27 of the axle 25, and constitutes the flute-forming rib. The axle 25 is angularly adjustable in its bearing bracket 20 and may be locked in a desired position. The ring 26 extends beyond the surface of the groove 7 at one point on its periphery, and does not project at a point diametrically opposite thereto, hence, by adjusting axle 25, the degree of projection of the ring 26 at the point at which it encounters the sheath 2 may be varied from the maximum to zero. The ring 26 is retained between the elements 24 by screws and nuts 32 provided with distance pieces 33. The bearing brackets 20 are so mounted that they may be tilted slightly to the axis of the cable if helical flutes are to be made, the degree of tilt being shown on scale 34.
