Abstract

896,163. Corrugating. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 6, 1960 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 34008/59. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). Apparatus for forming circumferential corrugations on a cylindrical body, such as a cable sheath, comprises a head arranged to be rotatable relatively to said body, said head having an aperture through which said cylindrical body can pass, and a rotatable roller carrying a helical thread member, such as a ridge, arranged on said head to be in contact with said cylindrical body, the arrangement being such that the operative part of the helical thread member lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of said cylindrical body. Aluminium tubing 12 to form a cable sheath passes through a cylindrical body 13 on a rotated face plate 10. A corrugating roller 28, freely rotatable on a spindle carried by a bridge member 21 adjustable radially of the body 13 along flats thereon, has a helical ridge 30 thereon and projects through a window in the body 13 to engage the sheath 12. The axis of the roller 28 is skew to the axis of the sheath 12 so that the operative part of the ridge runs in a plane normal to the axis of the sheath where it contacts the sheath. Rotation of the plate 10 thus causes circumferential corrugations to be formed in the sheath. The roller 28 may have a controlled rotation about its own axis. A second contra-rotating corrugating head may work close to the first head so as to neutralize any twist in the sheath. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a rotated face plate 41 carries skew supporting rollers 48, 49 and a skew corrugating roller 47. The corrugating roller may have a two or more start helix. A separate hauling device may pull the sheath through the corrugating head. Turning.-To produce a corrugating roll with a helical ridge a workpiece 55, Fig. 5, is mounted in an inclined position between offset centres 56 in a lathe and a cutting tool is reciprocated along the lathe.
