Description
s then Edi; er is si e s? HMS E. 51s.,
HIELZE! 331M513 EIUUBETENG.
Tona /Z whom is may concern r Be it knownthst I, MARIAN Ssonsnsnr, Jia, a, citizen of the United Ststes, end resi dent of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwsw s, kee, and State of "Wisconsin have invented.
certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible, Dial liiiountings; and I do hereby 'd8(3l3l8 that the following is a; full, clear,
, and erect description thereofli ll dials such as those used on radio snels and is particularly directed to a fiexi 1e mountmg. In radio panels it frequently happens that is the shafts which project therethrough are not exactly at right angles to the fsce of the panel. Consequently a disl'mounting thereon in the usual manner produces an un sightly appearance and frequently necessiee t'stes e remounting of the apparatus.
1 In addition to this the shafts are some times not straight with reference to the exis of the rotary portion and consequently the disls have unequal spacing from the panels se at diflerent portions of a revolution. This invention is designed to overcome the shove noted defects, and objects of such invention are, therefore, to provides flexible dial mounting which will at all times hold so the dial lightly n sinst the panel i'isce irrespective of any lick of alignment of the shaft, which is so constructed that the dial may he nosition'ed and secured upon the shaft sfter the apparatus is assembled; end which will cause the dial to bind against the penal with-s light spring pressure to prevent undesirable shifting after the device has been set. I
An embodiment of the invention'is show in the sccompsnying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a sectional view through the dial sndthe adjacent portion of the panel, such view corresponding to s section on the line 1-1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is an inner face View of the dial with the shaft shown in section end with ports broken sway to more clearly illustrate the construction;
Figures is as sectional view on the line are M of Figure 2. v
The dial comprises an annular ring 1 of any of the usual insulating materials, and
is provided with s circular rece% 2 upon its inner iece and with an inner shoulder or so "rim The extreme inner face of the dial,
is thus an annular-fist ring (see Figures This invention relates to mountings for 1 end 2). The adjusting iinoh 5 may he a hollow conicsl merely 2 es 1 shown, sud is provided with s thresded connection 6 with the dial 1, as me he seen from Fig ure 2. The knob may he of any desired material such as the nsnei insulnting mste--.
rial employed in-ccnstructin dials.
A centrally positioned he is provided and is equipned with sect screw .8. This s hub carries it spring spider having u pluralit of raclinliy extending spring arms 9... which in a plsne st right angles to the axis of the hub. These spring err. s have their outer ends received 131 recesses 10 formed in the annular shoulder 3. of the dial, ss'may he clearly seen from the sectional view shown in Fi ire-'3,
It 18 to he noted that the spaces 10 or notches ere of slightly greater-depth than the thiclmess or the spring finpers 9 of the spider, the purpose of this will hereinafter sppeer. These spring arms are held in no sition by means of s, ring 11 which may, if desired, he of metal. This ring seats against the annular shoulder 3 and is held in. please by counter-sunk screws 12'. o
In applying the dial to the nppsrstus, the adjusting knob 5 is removed and the hub 7 is slipped over the shaft 13 which freely projects from the front panel 14'. Thereafter, the hub is moved inwardly along the shaft 13 s slight distance so as to slightly flex the spring fin er ethos holding the ennnler face d of tee dial iletly sgsinst the outer surfsce of the panel 1i by s licht yielding pressure. The set screw 8 is ti hi;- ened and the adjusting knob 53 is" t on screwed, in placethns housing the interior parts.
In using this diei it will he found that although the short 13 miiy he slightly 0 of its correct position end may outwardly exsctiy st right 'sngles w t reference to the fees, of the panel, the! nevertheless the dial will. lie flatly in core tsot witlithe fees or the roenel in sll=positions of adjustment, This is due tojthe]; pf'eeuliar mounting of the dial for the enses or finger 9 will give suficien ts,
allow: the dial to sccurstely coniomi totsisface of the psnel. 1
see sa ntly greater depth of the nominee -or' out out shoulder '3 s owe the outer ends oi spring finger 9 to slide inwardly end not prog'eetf fiortione 10', in the ennnisr on project outwsrdlyeno tend to remain shaft, which has no exposed metallic parts,'
and which Will accurately compensate for errors in alignment of the shaft.
Although one form of the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a radio apparatus, the combination of a panel, a shaft projecting outwardly therefrom and a dial comprising an annular member, a manually operated portion projecting outwardlytherefrom and a resilient connection between said dial and said shaft tending to urge said dial towards said panel.
2. A dial for radio apparatus comprising a disk like member having a hollow central portion, a hub located within said central ortion and resilient means connecting said ub and said dial.
3. A. dial for radio apparatus comprising a disk like member having a hollow central portion, an adjacent knob extending outwardly therefrom, an annular portion proportion, a hub located inte riorly thereof and in axial alignment with said disk like memher, and a plurality of resilient members ere tending outwardly from said hub and carried by said dial and slidably related to said dial.
5. A'dial for radio apparatus comprising a disk like member having a hollow central portion, an adjusting knob dctachably scoured to said disk like member and projecting outwardly therefrom and having a contrally hollowed portion, a hub located interiorly of said dial and provided with a set screw, a plurality of radially extending resilient fingers carried by said hub, said dial having notches formed interiorly thereof adapted to receive said radial fingers and to permit slight relative motion radially inwardly or outwardly, and a retaining ring secured over said fingers and to said dial.
in testimony that I claim the -foraging I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of ll lilwaukec and State of lViscousin.
