Abstract

791,514. Corrugating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 31, 1955 [Feb. 1, 1954], No. 2943/54. Class 83 (4). A tube is helically corrugated by the relative rotation around the tube and in engagement therewith of a member, having a concave working surface lying in a plane inclined to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the tube, as the tube moves axially relative to the corrugating member. Stainless steel tubing 8 is secured at one end in a clamp 24 which is advanced by a lead screw to push the tube through a corrugating head 7 rotated around the tubing 8 by a sleeve 14. An annular corrugating member 1 carried by the head 7 is mounted in bearings 4, in a block 9 adjustable in the head 7 by a screw 10 to vary the eccentricity of the annular member 1 with respect to the tubing 8 to be corrugated. The annular corrugating member 1 is inclined, at the helix angle to be given to the corrugations, to a plane normal to the axis of the tubing. The diameter of the circular aperture in the annular member 1 may be less than of the overall diameter of the corrugated tube or if a portion of the tubing is to be passed through the head 7 without corrugation, the aperture may be larger than the diameter of the uncorrugated tube. The radius of curvature of the profile of the rim of the aperture is less than the desired radius of curvature at the root of the corrugations. The tubing 8 is supported just prior to the point of corrugation by an external bush 19 and an internal mandrel 22, tubular or solid and of steel or wood, which latter may be loose in the tubing 8 being urged back by the squeezing action of the corrugating member, such movement being resisted by the frictional engagement with the tubing or by fluid pressure or spring means. Alternatively, as shown, a steel rod 23 which may carry the mandrel 22, may be fixed by a clamp 27. The head 7 may carry more than one corrugating tool arranged to act successively. The tool 1 may comprise a part annular member 1, Fig. 5, rotated around the tubing, which member may have a working surface in the form of a parabola or part of an Archimedean spiral subtending 180 degrees with the radius of curvature decreasing from the uncorrugated to the corrugated part of the tube. The tube 8 may be rotated and the tool 1 kept stationary. The machine may be coupled to tube forming and welding apparatus. Specification 791,513 is referred to.
