Abstract

791,341. Guiding axles on railway vehicles. A. C. F. INDUSTRIES, Inc. May 2, 1955, No. 12639/55. Class 103(6) In an articulated railway car having coupled units each including a car body 26 and supported by an axle structure 15 adjacent one end thereof, each car body 26 carries at one end a pivoted coupler 28 and at the other end a fixed coupler 28a, the pivoted coupler 28 being connected to the axle structure 15 in order to direct the vertical planes of wheels 16 thereon substantially tangential to the track rails. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the coupler 28 is pivoted at 29 to the body 26. Lateral extensions 31 of the coupler 28 are connected by links 35 to pivots 21 on hangers 23 pivoted to brackets 24 on the body 26. Also connected to the pivots 21 are rods 20 pivoted at 18 to the structure 15, whereby pivoting of adjacent car bodies causes relative movement about the pivot 29 to be transmitted through the linkages 31, 35, 20 to cause movement of the structure 15 thus maintaining the planes of wheels 16 tangential to the rail curves. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the extensions 31 are connected by hydraulic telemotors to the pivots 21. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the coupler 28 is' connected by an extension 57 and a rod 59 to a pivot on a hanger common to a rod 51 coupled at 49 to one end of the axle structure 15, the other end of the structure 15 being longitudinally positioned relative to the car body by a rod 44 and rubber bushings being provided at the pivots to enable the structure 15 to move about pivot 46 on relative movement of adjacent bodies about the pivot 29. In a further embodiment, Figs. 10 and 12, the axle structure 15 is connected by rod 77 to the car body and the lower portions of members 61 rotatably carried bv stub axles 60 supporting the wheels 26 are connected by rods 65 to the car body. The upper portions of the members 61 are connected by links 73, 72 to the coupler 28, whereby the members 61 move in longitudinal planes about their connections to the rods 65 in response to relative movement of adjacent car bodies about the pivot 29 to deflect the structure 15 and maintain the planes of the wheels 16 tangentially to the rail curves.
