Abstract

Fluorocarbons are produced by the action of cobalt trifluoride or manganese trifluoride at between 150-400 DEG C. temperature on a hydrocarbon in the vapour phase. The cobalt trifluoride may be produced in situ by fluorinating cobalt difluoride. According to the plan of apparatus provided, a cylinder containing cobalt trifluoride is heated to 150-400 DEG C., and the hydrocarbon, e.g. C7H16 is passed in. The products of the reaction C7F16 and HF are separated as liquid phases. The fluorination of the CoF2 to the higher fluoride is provided for. Other hydrocarbons specified include C8H18, which gives C8F18, and dodecahydrodiphenyl which gives C12F22. All types of hydrocarbon are included in the reaction, including olefinic and aromatic.ALSO:Cobalt trifluoride may be prepared by dehydrating cobalt chloride hexahydrate CoCl2.6H2O to the anhydrous form, treating it with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to give cobalt difluoride, and converting this into the trifluoride by direct fluorination at any suitable temperature above 150 DEG C.
